Introduction:
Buttered squid, or "Cumi Saus Mentega" in Indonesian, is a delightful dish that combines tender squid with a rich and flavorful butter sauce. This dish is popular in many Asian cuisines and is beloved for its simplicity and exquisite taste. Here's how you can make it at home.
Ingredients:
- 500 grams of fresh squid, cleaned and cut into rings
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 red chili, thinly sliced (optional for added spice)
- 2 tablespoons of oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon of sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped spring onions for garnish
- Cooked rice, to serve
Instructions:
- Heat a pan over medium heat and melt the butter.
- Add minced garlic and chopped onion to the pan. Sauté until fragrant and onions are translucent.
- Add the squid rings to the pan and cook for about 2-3 minutes until they turn opaque.
- Stir in oyster sauce, soy sauce, and sweet soy sauce. Mix well to coat the squid evenly.
- If using, add sliced red chili for extra heat.
- Cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the squid.
- Season with salt and pepper according to your taste.
- Once done, transfer the buttered squid to a serving plate and garnish with chopped spring onions.
- Serve hot with steamed rice.
Tips:
- Ensure that the squid is cleaned thoroughly to remove any grit or membranes.
- Do not overcook the squid as it can become rubbery. It should be tender and just cooked through.
- Adjust the amount of chili according to your spice preference.
- You can add a splash of lemon juice for a tangy twist.
Variations:
- Add vegetables such as bell peppers, snap peas, or carrots for added texture and flavor.
- Substitute squid with shrimp or fish fillets for a different seafood variation.
- Experiment with different herbs and spices like ginger, lemongrass, or curry powder for a unique taste.
